Yeah, which is why this ship is full of reckless idiots who fly by the seat of their pants and yet somehow manage to wrest victory from the jaws of defeat nearly every day. They all learn soon enough.

Mating? As in procreation? I thought you said you weren't ready for children yet.

I must protest your words; there are a number of individuals who are not reckless and certainly not idiots.

I am not. It is more about bonding than procreation, though among Vulcans, it signifies that both parties are capable of producing children.

Try telling me that when half the away team comes back covered in blood and needing immediate medical attention.

It is not always their blood.
The missions we end up on are often dangerous but we have the fewest causalities of any ship in the 'Fleet.

It is a biological compulsion. Again, Doctor, this is not something of which we speak.

Is there anything we can do? I'm not going to knock you up before you're ready to have children just because your body wants you to. I tried that whole thing already and it blew up in my face. There's got to be some way to get around this.

Unless...it needs to be another Vulcan?

It does not, as my father was faithful to my mother. It is unnecessary to reproduce. It is the pon farr - an affliction that strikes every seven years, causing the blood to burn. Mated Vulcans seek out their mates. Unmated Vulcans are driven to find their mate.

It is a shameful time that brings about the loss of control and logic, which is why we do discuss the matter.

The average human is not driven to copulation nor does their blood burn. Pon farr can be deadly if it is not assuaged.

Leonard. It will strip my logic my me, as well as my emotional control.

Of course "deadly" is a concern! I kind of like having you around, in case you hadn't noticed.

Luckily, I'm a doctor. In the unlikely event you do hurt me, I can fix myself very quickly.

Pon farr is deeply exhausting. It can last for days and requires intercourse.

Intercourse with you is hardly some kind of hardship, Spock.

Multiple times, over the span of a number of days. It will not be like our normal activities.

I'm not that old just yet, I think I'll survive. It'll be like that time on shore leave when we didn't leave the hotel all weekend.

It is also likely I will forget my strength. I do not wish to harm you.

I know that. I know you would never knowingly hurt me, weak and fragile as I am.

But Spock, you gotta realize, I feel the same, alright. If the alternative is potentially DEADLY, then I'm perfectly happy to risk a few bruises when you grab me too hard.

That is not the only complication.
Pon farr is a time of bonding for couples; it requires a complete bond.

There are mentions that meditation can ease the affliction.

Well. That's a little more complicated, but it's not the end of the world, right? I know I'm not the most logical choice for a bond mate but... We're pretty close already, right?

You are my soulmate; I would have no other bond mate.

Then I don't really see the issue. Sure, it's a little sooner than I would have chosen, probably, but. I'm not gonna let you die on me, Spock. Not because I'm a little gun-shy.

I would rather not force you to make that decision simply because I might be in danger.

I am unsure how deeply I will be affected, as I am half-human.

You aren't forcing me to do anything. You're my soulmate and I love you.
